Hello everyone,
Thank you for your continued support and patience while I completed my degree; to become Dr Olivia, Osteopath! I would not have been able to do it without you all. I’m writing to share some exciting news and explain a transition in my practice.
After completing my osteopathy degree, I’ll transition from massage therapy to osteopathy practice as of March 2025. I will no longer be offering standalone massage therapy appointments after February 2025. However, I’m thrilled to offer osteopathic services, which build upon my massage therapy experience and provide a more comprehensive approach to your health and well-being.
I would like to try and answer a few questions for you all to hopefully make this a smooth transition:
What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a holistic healthcare system emphasising the body’s structural and functional interconnectedness. Osteopathic practitioners use manual therapies like massage, stretching, and articulation to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal imbalances, aiming to restore the body’s natural healing abilities. Osteopaths practice is governed by a strict ethical code and core capabilities such as: communication; educating and promoting patient health; collaborating with other healthcare providers; and leading and managing resources effectively. This holistic approach considers physical, mental, and social well-being, incorporating lifestyle advice, exercise plans, and collaboration with other healthcare professionals to achieve optimal health outcomes.
What types of conditions can you address and/or assist with osteopathy?
Musculoskeletal/soft tissue conditions such as muscle tears/ tendonitis/ tendinopathies/ strains/ sprains, sports injuries, joint pain, etc.,
Conditions affecting the digestive system and nervous system, such as headaches, dizziness, menstrual discomfort, etc.,
Autoimmune conditions such as PMR, RA, PsA, etc.,
How is Osteopathy different from Chiropractic & Physiotherapy care?
While osteopathy, chiropractic, and physiotherapy care address musculoskeletal issues, their philosophies and techniques can differ. Simply put chiropractic care primarily focuses on spinal adjustments, and physiotherapy often focuses more specifically on rehabilitation and exercise programs. Osteopathy takes a more holistic view, considering the entire body’s interconnectedness and when necessary, can utilise various methods, including Chiro and Physio modalities.
What will change for you?
As an osteopath, I can offer:
- Comprehensive Diagnosis: A more thorough assessment of your condition.
- Rehabilitation Programs: Personalised plans to aid your recovery and assist in continuing maintenance.
- Lifestyle Advice: Recommendations on exercise, nutrition, and ergonomics to support your overall health.
- Collaboration with Your GP: I can work closely with your doctor to create a comprehensive care plan.
What are the typical treatment sessions like?
A ‘typical’ osteopathic session lasts 30 – 45 minutes. It begins with a thorough assessment of your condition and its underlying causes. Treatment may involve palpation, movement assessment, and discussions about your lifestyle and medical history. Then, I’ll use various hands-on techniques, including massage, stretching, joint mobilisation, and articulation, tailored to your needs. You can expect mild discomfort during the treatment, but it should not be painful. After the treatment, if needed, I’ll provide individualised advice on self-care and exercises.
Pricing Changes:
Due to the increased scope of my practice and the advanced training required to become an osteopath, there will be some price adjustments to my appointments. I’ve aimed to keep these changes as minimal as possible to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible for you.
Is osteopathy covered by Work Cover/ other insurance?
Please check with your Work Cover/ other insurance provider directly to confirm your coverage for osteopathic treatment (it’s often grouped with physiotherapy and chiropractic).
Transitioning Your Care:
To begin osteopathic treatment, you’ll need to complete a new patient intake form and schedule an initial consultation. As a thank you for your loyalty to GPT and me, I am offering a discount on your initial osteopathic appointment if you were a client within the past 6 months (before March 2025).
I understand these changes may raise questions, so please don’t hesitate to contact me to discuss anything further. I’m happy to answer any questions about my transition and what it means for your care. I will happily provide referrals to other practitioners if you choose not to continue your care with me.
Will you still offer any massage techniques as part of your osteopathic treatments?
Yes, I will integrate some soft tissue massage techniques into my osteopathic treatments where appropriate to address muscle tension and improve tissue mobility.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support.
Please feel free to email us with any further questions or queries – [email protected]
I look forward to continuing to support you on your health journey.
